Arsenal stayed in touch with Premier League leaders Manchester City after a crucial 2-0 win over third-placed Newcastle.

A long-range shot from Martin Ødegaard and an own goal from Fabian Schär ended Arsenal's victory, although both sides could easily have scored more goals in a quick and entertaining game.

The result shows the Gunners are a point behind Manchester City, having played a game more than the defending champions.

City, who beat Leeds 2-1 on Saturday, are still season-ending favorites to triumph but Arsenal's performance against a strong Newcastle side showed they were reluctant to give up the title race.

"I think we showed something special today, it's not easy to come here and win," Ødegaard, who scored twice in Tuesday's 3-1 win over Chelsea, told Sky Sports.

“Like us, we had to be really smart, sometimes we had to be a bit ugly. I think it's a big step for us,
